Dear Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal,

We have just learned that Mumia has developed a serious health problem. His feet are very swollen & are causing him considerable pain. He is concerned that he may be suffering from a blood clot. We are trying to arrange for a private physician to visit as opposed to the prison doctor at SCI Green. Mumia does not have confidence in the latter.

Please flood SCI Green's phone line: (724) 852-2902. During the evening shift, ask for Captain Hall (if he's out after midnight, ask for the Shift Director). After 8am in the morning, ask for Superintendent Folino (if they aren't there ask for the current Shift Director or the medical staff). Demand:

1. that Mumia be allowed to be examined and treated by an outside-of-prison doctor and

2. that he be immediately given fresh garlic, as per his request, as an interim treatment to boost his body's natural defenses.

We will keep you posted.

In solidarity,

Laura Herrera and Jeff Mackler, Co-Coordinators

Mumia Needs Help: Contact These Officials

In light of Mumia's health condition, please also contact these elected officials who are supportive of Mumia and ask that they put pressure on SCI Greene Prison and demand that Mumia's minimum requests be met: that he be allowed to be examined by an outside doctor of his choice, and that he be given fresh garlic immediately to boost his body's natural defenses.

Remind them that even simple health conditions can turn serious in prison conditions, and that sickness brought about by incarceration is one of the leading killers of prisoners. Mumia's condition should be considered very serious until proven otherwise. If the swelling of his feet is indeed being caused by blood clotting, this is potentially life threatening situation.

Remember Merle Africa, who died in prison under very suspicious circumstances following what should have been a mild illness. Merle surely would not have passed on had she not been enduring prison conditions after years of unjust incarceration, making her death little more than murder at the hands of her captors.
